    Homeless Shelter Kit Drive

    Homeless Shelter Kit Drive

Did you brave the crowds for Black Friday shopping?  Or do you wait a few days before jumping into the hustle and bustle of yuletide spending?  Whatever your shopping preference, we’ve got a shopping need for which we’d love your help!

As part of our Be Rich:: Do More, Give More campaign, we scheduled a donation drive to support each of our nonprofit partners. For Buckhead Christian Ministry, we collected 7 tons of food, and we just “wrapped up”  a toy drive for the students at Woodson Elementary. It’s been great to see your generosity so far!

Now, it’s time for a drive to benefit our third Be Rich partner, the Atlanta Union Mission (AUM).  We’re collecting “shelter starter kits” to give to people as they enter one of AUM’s homeless shelters. To make things easier for you, we’ve partnered with Tower Place Bed Bath & Beyond across from the church. An AUM employee pre-selected specific items for the shelter starter kits, which include twin sheets (including pillowcase), a cotton blanket, a towel, and a washcloth. The kits cost $37.96 plus tax. You can even use one of the coupons Bed Bath & Beyond sends you in the mail when making your purchase!

So, drop by the Tower Place Bed Bath & Beyond when you’re out on this week, ask for a “Buckhead Church shelter starter kit,” and bring it to church with you.  We’ll have volunteers ready and waiting in the lobbies to collect the kits for the next 2 Sundays.

Thank you for putting your shopping skills to use to support the Atlanta Union Mission!

A Thanksgiving Letter to Buckhead Church

    Dear Buckhead Church,

    Thank you.

Thank you for not only understanding the vision God has given us but, more importantly, living the vision.

Thank you for understanding that it’s not about what the church can do for us but rather what the church can do through us.

Thank you for challenging and trusting us with difficult decisions like closing 7/22 and changing KidStuf.

Thank you for being generous in good economic times and difficult economic times.

Thank you for this comment I heard two weeks ago: “The volunteers at Buckhead Church are so friendly, but not in a cheesy, uncomfortable kind of way. They seem to be sincerely glad my family and I are here.”

Thank you for being courageous enough to invite your friends to Buckhead. Without that, we just become a church of insiders.

Thank you for being a people of ‘confident humility.’ Humble knowing that without God our efforts are in vain. Yet, confident knowing that with God anything is possible.

Thank you for being more excited about our future than you are about our past. And for remembering we are nowhere near our potential as a church.

Thank you for letting this former marketing guy with no church credentials serve here. I still wonder why you do that.

And finally, thank you for your passionate obedience to Jesus’ command in Matthew 28: 18 – 20.

For this and so many other reasons, I will always be eternally grateful.

    Happy Thanksgiving Buckhead Church.

    Jeff

    13,000 Pounds!

    13,000 Pounds!

13,000 pounds.  That’s how much food you brought in for our food drive for Buckhead Christian Ministry, one of our Intersect partners.  Well, actually, you brought in more than that but that was the count as the polls closed late last night.

Do yourself a favor and check out BCM’s website for two minutes: http://www.buckheadchristianministry.org/

The food you brought yesterday is there today.

    Grateful and amazed,

    Jeff

PS. Check out our phenomenal volunteers in these photos who sorted, boxed, loaded and unloaded yesterday!

    Be Rich Food Drive

    Be Rich Food Drive

This weekend is a big one for our Be Rich:: Do More, Give More campaign (www.howtoberich.org).  Hopefully it can be a big weekend for you personally as well since there’s an opportunity to apply Andy’s message from last Sunday (if you didn’t get to hear it, check it out!) by participating in our Be Rich:: Do More, Give More food drive

In his message, Andy focused on our motivation to serve and give to others. He talked about shifting our attitude in giving from a results-driven mentality to one based on mirroring God’s generosity to us when he gave us a Savior. Oftentimes, the reason we give is to fix things or to feel good or for a tax break.  But, giving shouldn’t be about us or what we want to see happen. It’s about reflecting God’s exceeding generosity to us by being generous to those around us.

Therefore, this weekend we’re providing an opportunity for you to be lavishly generous to others. At all 3 services on Sunday we’ll collect food to donate to Buckhead Christian Ministry. It’s simple for you to participate! Use the shopping list below as you stop by a grocery store between now and Sunday - please make sure none of the packaging is glass. Bring the food with you to church this weekend. There will be food collection stations inside all the main entrances of the building where you can drop off your donation.

    List of Needs

    canned fruit

    canned vegetables

    canned beans

    dried beans

    jelly

    peanut butter

    oatmeal, grits, or cereal

    pasta

    rice

    soup

    tuna or canned meat

Note: Please bring your items in a cardboard box (I just asked a clerk at the grocery store for a box while I was shopping)

As a church, let’s overwhelm Buckhead Christian Ministry as we reflect the generosity of our Savior.  Join us in being extravagant givers this Sunday!  It’ll be fun to see what God does in our community, and in our hearts.

    Megan Linger, Intersect Coordinator

    A Generous Opportunity

As much as I hate to admit this, when something breaks in our home Wendy fixes it. Apparently, I had a mechanical bypass when I was younger because the simplest things take me forever. Wendy simply smiles and says, “Let me see that.” In a matter of minutes (sometimes seconds) whatever is broken is fixed.

Still, I do remember one successful mechanical experience, (years ago.) I passed by an elderly man on the road whose car had a flat tire. I pulled off to help. Seven hours later his tire was changed. (Okay, it didn’t take seven hours but it seemed like it.) When I was leaving, he pulled out his wallet offering to pay me. When I refused to take the money, he asked, “Why did you stop to help me?”

I call these moments “generous opportunities.” These are opportunities to be generous and serve when there’s no clear reason to do so in the minds of those we’re serving. We live in an “I’ll scratch your back if you’ll scratch mine” world. Jesus described a different way of living. Andy will talk about this different way on Sunday and how you can be a part of it. Until then, watch this quick video about how we as a church are striving to provide generous opportunities for you and your small group.

In the meantime, does anyone know if there’s one of those “Mechanics for Dummies” books out there? I need it.

    What Went Wrong?

    www_currentseries.jpg

“How’d we get here?” was a question I heard a reporter ask a financial expert about the current economic crisis.  It’s a good question.  In other words, “What Went Wrong?”

Last Sunday, we began a series looking at this question from the life of King Solomon.  This legendary man had so much promise and yet the Bible tells us that his story is one of squandered potential.  His life is much more than a lesson from history.  It’s a lesson for today.  For you and me.  For our nation.  The Bible graciously provides us with two answers to the question of what went wrong with King Solomon.  Last week, we looked at the first answer.  This Sunday, we’ll conclude by looking at the second.

As we said last week, the two answers to this question won’t change Solomon’s story.  But these answers do have the power to change and protect your story and mine.

So invite a friend Sunday. Pull up a chair. And let’s listen to what God wants to tell us as we look at what went wrong with the wisest man who ever lived.

    Respond but not retreat

The economy has generated a lot of concern among businesses, families and non-profit organizations. And understandably so.

At Buckhead, we want to lead very well during this season. Last week, I shared with our leadership team that I want us as a church to “respond but not retreat.”

This simply means that I want us to respond to the situation by continuing to use the financial systems we have in place allowing us to make wise stewardship decisions.   At the same time, I do not want us retreating at all from the mission God has placed before us.

We will continue to do our very best to be wise stewards of the resources entrusted to us.  And we will also move with confidence and faith that God is with us.

As your campus pastor, I greatly value your continued confidence and support which allows us to respond wisely to the current economic situation but not retreat one inch from leading people into a growing relationship with Christ.

    Jeff
