It’s GroupLink week at Buckhead Church. We say it often around here that life is better connected. Here’s Joel’s story of learning that first hand.
Six years ago I moved to Atlanta and began attending Buckhead Church. I spent a good number of months in the back row, maybe up in the balcony a time or two, definitely doing my best to blend in with the crowd. Moving to Atlanta was a challenging transition for me and finding a place where I belonged was a big part of that struggle. I didn’t know anyone in the city and had no real clue where to begin meeting people. So, as the August Grouplink came around, I decided to take the plunge—I would join a Community Group.
Initially, I joined that first group as a way to meet people, because candidly I didn’t want to sit by myself on Sunday mornings anymore. It was through this group that I began to build friendships and to know people on a deeper level. Slowly, these guys began to pour into my life and showed me they really cared. Not just if I showed up for a Sunday night Bible study or not, but they were interested in my life. Not just a surface level conversation, but the “Hey, we’re going out to dinner; want to come?” or “I feel like you’ve got a lot going on right now. Do you want to grab a cup of coffee and catch up?” kind of conversations.
I navigated some really tough stuff that year, and they were right beside me to help me through it. As I look back on that first community group, I realize it was definitely a pivotal circumstance and filled with providential relationships. God used the guys in that group to encourage me, to help me through life’s struggles, to pray for me, and ultimately to point me in the right direction so I could draw closer with the Lord.
As that group came to a close, I continued in community with another group and ultimately began leading a group myself. God’s plans are always better than ours, and I would have missed these opportunities had I not been willing to get connected, to stay connected, and to risk being fully known within that community.
Without a doubt, I would not be where I am in my walk with the Lord had it not been for those he strategically placed around me along the way. I am so thankful for God’s grace in my life and the many people he has put in my path. Life truly is better connected.
