Developing a Healthy Staff Culture
There’s a lot the business world can learn from the church world. There are just as many lessons the corporate world can offer church leaders. But whether it’s a church, a business, a profit, or nonprofit, thriving organizations have one thing in common—a passion to develop their staffs.
Jim Collins recognizes this principle: “As leaders you can’t predict the future. What you can do is develop your people. Doing so will take care of the future.”
As leaders, it’s not that we don’t want to develop our people. In fact, many of us have the best intentions when it comes to employee development. But often, our good intentions are nudged to the back burner for other, more time-sensitive issues. In church world, Sunday is always coming. For businesses, the quarter close is fast approaching. And the squeakiest wheel is usually the one that impacts an organization’s finances.
And while we’re busy putting out fires, meeting quotas, or collecting Sunday’s offerings, our staff people and their professional development fall by the wayside. Staff development just never seems urgent.
When I talk to leaders, I find that the issue isn’t whether staff development is important. It’s just that most people don’t think they have the time to invest in their employees. Sound familiar?
This week on the blog we’re going to discuss three steps that you can take to develop a healthy staff culture. Not only is it critical for long-term success, it can also happen within the context of everyday life.
Tomorrow, we will start with step one. In the meantime, what are some resources you would suggest on this topic?

I am looking forward to hearing what else is said here about this topic. I completely agree that too often Sunday is so urgent in church world, that staff development must be an intentional effort of the staff and us as leaders.

Why do people go to church on Sunday when in the bible says go to church on Saturday?
