The Secret to Starting 2010 Strong

Soon, we will start hearing the familiar refrain of New Year’s Resolutions.  Lose weight. Save more. Less TV. It happens each year.

Personally, I really like the freshness of a new year and the possibilities of thinking through resolutions.   And yet, there’s a secret to beginning the year with momentum.  It has more to do with December than it does with January.

Here’s the secret: Whatever you can do positively in the final days of 2009 will fuel the momentum in the early days of 2010. This means that December 1 is actually more important than January 1.  (And as you know, December 1 is actually, today.)

On Thursday, I will spend half of the day thinking through 2010 with some incredibly talented, challenging and encouraging friends.   I thought it might be helpful to see some of the questions we will work through in order to start 2010 strong, and a lot of this has to do with finishing well in 2009.

What could you do financially in December that would create some momentum in January?  (Examples: Read a money management book this month.  Watch or listen to the Balanced series by Andy.)

What three people could you reach out to that could benefit from what you have or could offer?

Figure out a way to exercise 30 minutes more each week in December. (For some of us, this might mean going from 0 to 30.  That’s fine. Remember, it’s all about generating momentum in December for January.)

Think about it.  What could you do in December to fuel a great start in January?

Jeff

I really like this idea of generating momentum. I am going to make “What could you do in December to fuel a great start in January?” my mantra for this month. Now, time to think about what I am going to do specifically, and I need to make it action oriented. Thanks, Jeff!

Love the concept – makes me wonder why we wait until December or January to step back and assess, re-assess, and make course corrections. May be good to formalize a personal “check-in” routine throughout the year to go with the “begin in December” effort.

The idea of momentum is a great one! Many people choose goals that they aren’t very excited about or are too vague (e.g. lose weight vs. lose 15 pounds by the end of March). Check out Resolution Velcro. We’re helping people keep their New Year’s Resolutions for a change using a proven personal development and person change methods.

KSC – you can do it.
Justin, I’ll think about that. We can do that on the blog.
