Personal Advisory Board Part 2

“Who should you consider for your personal advisory board?”  That’s the question we’ll discuss today as we continue our focus on this idea.

In forming my board, I asked a simple question: “Who do I want to be like when I grow up?”

The answer goes like this:

I want to be a devoted, passionate follower of Jesus.
I want to be a loving, focused, self-less husband.
I want to be an intentional, legacy-leaving Dad.
I want to be a faithful steward of the resources entrusted to me.

There’s more but you get the drift.

The next thing I did is pray.  I asked for God to lead me to four men who I could learn from and emulate.  Those four guys happened to attend Buckhead Church and that was a plus for me.  David McDaniel, Rocky Butler, Scotland Wright and Keith Eigel have formed my board for a few years now.   All of these guys are older than me which I think is important because they have traveled roads that I have yet to travel.  This allows them to speak from experience and wisdom.  Since they attend Buckhead, they are able to see me in a leadership role as well as talk to the staff and get input from them on how I’m doing.

I’m often asked about how to find a mentor.  I believe the two most important things you can do is to clearly articulate what you want a mentor or mentors to do, and pray.  There’s an old adage that says, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”

If you’re looking for people (mentors) to form your personal advisory board, how would you define success for them?
