Something’s going on…

I spent most of Sunday attending another church.

Courageous Church launched in Midtown by my new friends Shaun and Jason King.  I walked away so encouraged by what these two brothers and their team are doing for the Kingdom. www.courageous.tv

As I was driving back to Buckhead, I started getting text message updates from other pastor friends about what God was doing at their churches.  Here are a few:

  • Tony Morgan texted to say that NewSpring Church in South Carolina launched their third campus in Florence.  The other two are in Anderson and Greenville.  Over 300 people showed up in Florence on opening Sunday! Are you kidding me?!  www.newspring.cc

  • Gary Lamb leads Revolution Church in Canton.  Forty people accepted Christ there yesterday and they are already 85% full having just moved into a new building last week.  Last week!  Crazy! www.therevolution.tv

And then, text messages starting lighting up like a Christmas tree.

  • Oak Leaf Church in Cartersville– over 1,200 people attended.
  • Wiregrass Church, our strategic partnership church in Dothan, had the most people in its history.
  • Cross Point Church in Nashville was bursting at the seams.
  • Athens Church had yet another great Sunday.
  • Connexus Church, our partnership church in Canada, is trying to figure out how to accommodate more families.
  • And then, I got a text message from the Buckhead staff saying that the KidStuf Theater we were using for overflow at 11 was completely overflowing.  (Our overflow had overflowed. Hmmmmm…..)

With all of this swirling around, I couldn’t help but think that something’s going on here — God is using these uncertain times to draw more and more people to Him.  What is happening in churches all around underscores the fact that His Church is on the move in powerful, substantial ways.

There’s simply nothing that fires me up more than hearing the stories I heard and saw yesterday.  Granted, it’s not about attendance numbers.  And yet, each one of those attendance figures reflects a life that Jesus died for.  Let’s not forget that.

Let’s also not forget one other thing.  Even though we set another round of attendance records Sunday at Buckhead Church and beyond, there are still more who choose not to follow Jesus than those who do.  That’s why I stopped to take this photo.

It’s not the most creative photo in the world but it means a lot to me because the people inside these buildings (and those in Anderson, Ontario, Greenville, Dothan, Nashville, Canton and beyond) matter to God too.    We must never lose our passion of being preoccupied with those who aren’t here, and those who don’t know Jesus.

Folks, something’s happening.  That ‘something’ is the fact that God is on the move.  Not since 9/11 have we sensed this kind of collective momentum.  Let’s not squander this opportunity.  Pray.  Stay unified.  Stay focused.  Love God.  Love People.

Because something’s going on.

Jeff

    Awesome reports!!!
Two weeks in a row, our 2nd service at the church at Greenbrier in Evans, GA has had a full house. Its the most people I’ve seen in 2 consecutive weeks since we’ve added the 2nd service. Yeah God!

I’ve always respected NP Ministries for their excellence, but you’re also leading the way in Kingdom-mindedness. I’m sure I speak for thousands of others when I say “thanks.”

Think of me as the little kid telling his dad “I’m proud of you.”

Such important perspective… we are blessed to get to be a part of what God is up to.

I saw many of those same Twitter updates yesterday and felt the same. God is on the move. I truly think He is using the economic meltdown to bring people back to Him. Such an awesome opportunity for us to be the light and invite others to focus on what matters most.

It’s a little cliché but my motto, and the central focus of our church, for 2009 is…

Let Your Light Shine in 2009!
Jesus said of His people: “‘You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.’” (Matthew 5:14-16, NIV)

Thanks to Buckhead Church for being so supportive of all of these new churches, especially the ones in their own backyard. I attend Buckhead and learned about Courageous Church through them and am now volunteering there as well. I am proud to be living in Atlanta as I know some great things are getting ready to happen here!

I was at Courageous Church yesterday as well and it was awesome. Then I went to the 6:00 service at Buckhead Church and was surprised to see that there were people sitting in the balcony! These tough times are definitely drawing people to God. What a blessing to be a part of the movement and to see it all unfold!

Okay, these comments fired me up even more!!! Thanks everyone! I’ve also received some great emails and texts since this blog entry from other leaders about what’s happening in their communities. More proof that something’s going on!
