What’s on your reading list for 2009?
Over the next couple of days here on the Buckhead blog, I’ll be reviewing the books I read in 2008 as well as listing the books I plan to read in 2009. Before that happens though, I thought you should go first. What book or books would you recommend on my 2009 reading list? (And yes, the Bible is always on the list.)
Thanks!
Jeff

The best thing I read in ’08 is “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction” by Eugene Peterson. Easily.
It’s a smart, substantive book on discipleship and the Songs of Ascent in the Psalms. It also clearly and concisely articulates some of the potential pitfalls we face (and mostly avoid, I must) with the way we do church at Buckhead. Great book.

Turn My Mourning Into Dancing by Henri Nouwen
Finding hope and joy in the midst of tough times will be a continuing theme in 2009 for many people (mourning not just the loss of loved ones, but the loss of lifestyle, planned futures, etc). Henri has some great thoughts here.

!) “The Road Less Traveled” by M. Scott Peck – i like to read this book every 10 years. I think this book could provide fodder for various sermons. Here’s the first paragraph – “Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest of truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly understand and accept it – then is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters”.
2) “Money, Sex & Power” by Richard Foster. He also wrote the “Celebration of Discipline”. This could be another book providing thoughts / outlines for a certain sermon.
